Last week I was invited to the Dermalogica Head Office for an exclusive preview of their innovative new products by Dr. Diana Howard (Vice President of Global Education and Research and Development at Dermalogica) and once again they did not disappoint.
“As a leading ingredient innovator for the skin care industry, researcher, educator, author and lecturer, Diana Howard, Ph.D., has been instrumental to the success of Dermalogica as the preferred brand of skin care professionals worldwide.”
So, what can you expect from Dermalogica in the next few months?
1. OVERNIGHT RETINOL REPAIR
I have been looking for a new anti aging night cream for a while now so this product couldn’t have come at a better time. I have been using it for a week now and absolutely love the feel of my skin. I will post a full review in the next few weeks but in the meantime here is a rundown of what Overnight Retinol Repair is all about!
Drawing on one of the most powerful ingredients recommended by medical professionals to radically treat the signs of aging, Dermalogica® introduces new Overnight Retinol Repair. Overnight Retinol Repair accelerates skin renewal, reverses the signs of photo-aging, improves skin tone, and increases skin firmness. This is the first-ever retinol treatment to offer a unique customization option, allowing users to enjoy the benefits of a retinoid while experiencing maximum comfort and efficacy.
Key to the formula is 0.5% retinol, pure Vitamin A, which has been demonstrated to reverse both the signs of intrinsic aging (genetics) as well as extrinsic aging (environmental). Studies have shown that retinol significantly restores the structural integrity of the skin, accelerating cell turnover and renewal, stimulating collagen production, improving epidermal thickness, and increasing elastin biosynthesis. The retinol molecule on its own, however, is chemically unstable, degrading with exposure to sunlight and air, so Dermalogica® utilizes microencapsulation technology to retain stability, maintaining concentration levels. The microencapsulation technology used in Overnight Retinol Repair also allows for a controlled-release delivery system which enables the active retinol to penetrate deeply into the skin for optimum results.
As part of Dermalogica’s AGE Smart line – categorized by products containing scientifically-advanced ingredients proven to dramatically treat the biochemical reactions (aging triggers) before they start – Overnight Retinol Repair draws on several additional active ingredients that work together to reduce the appearance of aging skin:
o Peptide Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 (PT-5) to boost collagen formation, treat wrinkles, and firm skin
o A unique tripeptide to stimulate hyaluronic acid and collagen synthesis, for smoother skin and reduction of wrinkle-depth
• Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (stabilized Vitamin C) to support collagen synthesis and offer antioxidant protection in combating free radicals
• A unique bioenergized Copper (Cu++) Amino Acid Complex, clinically proven to help reduce visible wrinkles and increase collagen and elastin production
• Ceramides and polysaccharides to help restore the skin’s barrier properties and increase moisture within the skin to soften lines
• Natural botanicals Lavender and Licorice Root to help calm and soothe irritated skin
While the benefits of using retinol on the skin are numerous, skin irritation can be a common side effect, with some individuals experiencing itching, burning, redness, and peeling. To minimize this “retinoid reaction,” Dermalogica® recommends pre-conditioning the skin, starting with small concentrations of retinol application so skin can build up natural retinoid receptors and a tolerance to the ingredient over time. Taking this recommendation one step further, Dermalogica® includes a new Buffer Cream with Overnight Retinol Repair, allowing users to control the concentration of retinol being applied to skin, and further helping them adjust to the active ingredient.
Size: 15ml tube of Beuufer Cream, 30ml Tube of Overnight Retinol Repair
Application: During initial use, Dermalogica® recommends starting with a mix of one part Overnight Retinol Repair to three parts Buffer Cream, and gradually inversing the ratios as skin acclimates to the treatment. Once a tolerance has been built, each individual can take a personalized approach, depending on skin’s comfort level, type, and condition.
2. CHARCOAL RESCUE MASQUE
Dermalogica’s new Charcoal Rescue Masque detoxifies, brightens, and invigorates all skin conditions, with ingredients that draw out excess oil and impurities, refine pores, calm redness, and improve skin texture and smoothness. With the power to address skin aging, dullness, breakouts, and sensitivity, this heroic skin saviour is ideal for anyone looking for a healthy, vibrant, and balanced glow.
Sluggish skin is increasingly common in the modern age. Environmental pollutants combine daily with natural sebum secretions to form a waxy coating on the skin, dulling the skin’s appearance and contributing to inflammation and congestion. Research conducted at The International Dermal Institute reflects that most women only spend about 20 seconds washing their face – not nearly enough to penetrate debris. Charcoal Rescue Masque significantly enhances cleansing, helping remove build-up and stimulate cellular turnover, making it a go-to for healthy, glowing skin.
Activated Binchotan (aka Japanese Ubame Oak) Charcoal is a key ingredient used to draw out excess sebum, toxins, and other impurities. It has the ability to trap toxins and chemicals in the body, allowing them to be flushed out so that the body doesn’t reabsorb them. Common charcoal is made from peat, coal, wood, coconut shell, or petroleum. “Activated charcoal” is similar to common charcoal, but is made especially for use as a medicine and in skincare. To make activated charcoal, manufacturers heat common charcoal in the presence of a gas that causes the charcoal to develop lots of internal spaces or “pores.” These pores help activated charcoal “trap” chemicals.
Additional ingredients include:
• 5% Sulfur promotes cellular turnover for dramatically brighter skin; renowned for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties when treating acne, sulfur is also ideal for calming rosacea, eczema, and sebaceous dermatitis
• Volcanic ash, hot spring, marine silt (mud), and Bamboo stem extract are physical exfoliants that leave skin smooth and revitalized
• Phytic acid, lactic acid, and mandelic acid are chemical exfoliants that accelerate cellular turnover, increasing collagen production and brightening skin
• Niacinamide reduces redness and inflammation
• Chilean Wild Mint clarifies skin and helps refine pores
Size: 75ml Tube
Application: Cleanse skin, then apply generously to face and throat, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 7-10 minutes, then lightly massage with wet hands. Rinse thoroughly, and follow with prescribed Dermalogica® moisturizer. Apply up to four times per week whenever skin needs rescuing.
*Please note that CHARCOAL RESCUE MASQUE will only be available in Dermalogica stores from April 2016
3. HYDRABLUR PRIMER
Fusing powerful skin treatment technology with the most elegant aesthetic primer chemistry available today, Dermalogica® introduces new HydraBlurTM Primer. The multi-tasking, hydrating product optimises skin health, offers a dramatic “blurring” effect, and transforms skin into an even surface, creating a flawless canvas for makeup application or a naturally radiant, makeup-free appearance.
The lightweight, non-greasy formula is ideal for all skin conditions, particularly dry or dehydrated skin. Intense, sustained-release moisturisation locks in ideal hydration levels and controls Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL); this helps maintain critical moisture balance, leaving skin looking and feeling hydrated throughout the day, as well as helps decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Unique, microencapsulated color technology releases bursts of colour upon application to provide light coverage and balance all skin tones while enhancing radiance. HydraBlurTM Primer reduces the appearance of pores without drying the skin and mattifies against an oily shine, providing a silky, luminous finish.
• H2ORelease™ Complex of Sodium Hyaluronate, Algin and Trehalose optimizes hydration levels to maintain skin flexibility and smoothness, and helps provide sustained, intense moisturisation lasting throughout the day
• Abyssinian Seed Oil smooths skin texture and tone by creating a non-occlusive film that helps maintain critical moisture balance, without clogging pores
• Mattifiers reduce oily sheen and disguise the appearance of fine, dry lines and imperfections to create an even canvas with a soft-focus or blurred effect
• Fomes Officinalis (Mushroom) Extract reduces pore visibility and size
• Wu-Zhu-Yu (Evodia Rutaecarpa) Fruit Extract enhances skin radiance by boosting microcirculation
• Micro-encapsulated tint releases upon application to provide neutral coverage
Size: 22ml Tube
Application: First cleans skin, then apply preferred moisturiser and SPF and following with primer application. You can place your foundation over the primer.
*Please note that HydraBlurTM Primer will only be available in Dermalogica stores from early 2016
I will post reviews of the Charcoal Rescue Masque and Overnight Retinol Repair in the next few weeks.

I personally know the amount of effort it takes to run a 5* spa and would like to congratulate all the spa winners and finalists and wish them all the best in the future.
If I had to describe this treatment foundation in a few words, they would be: Best Foundation I’ve ever used.
I’ve highlighted treatment above, as Oxygenetix is not just another base for your make up.
“Oxygenetix is a breakthrough foundation used to cover, help heal and minimize – even eliminate – procedural scars”
I started using this foundation when my skin was particularly bad, I had just started new medication and I couldn’t get the hormonal breakouts under my jaw line to calm down. As much as other foundations were covering up the embarrassing situation on my face, they were aggravating the problem. I was at my wits end. I then started reading rave reviews on twitter and was desperate to try it. I met Justine Cambell, the sales and marketing manager of oxygenetix and she kindly gave me a bottle to try. To say my skin has never been better is un understatement. My breakouts slowly started to improve and my skin overall had an amazing glow to it. I slept with the foundation on more time that I should have and didn’t wake up with that feeling of a dirty face and clogged pores. In fact I read on the website “if left on it works its magic all night long while you sleep” (*please note that I in no way advocate sleeping with make-up on at all, it is vitally important to wash and treat your skin every night.) I started off building this foundation quite heavily, but after 2 weeks less was more. (I didn’t take a before and after photo, but I am definitely repurchasing this foundation so will put one up then!)
Minimising downtime and scarring following surgery was the principle of importance when Barry Knapp formulated and developed Oxygenextix Breathable Foundation. Oxygenetix is applied right after a very aggressive procedure and not only helps the healing process, but makes you less self conscious when you walk out the treatment room, as your skin looks normal.
Lets get down to why this foundation is so incredible:
- stimulates cell growth
- safe on all skin types
- immediately soothes and cools upon application, making it perfect to use post peel
- spf 25 (physical block)
- water resistant – great for the beach in summer and will stay on for upto 90 minutes of swimming
- transfer resistant
- non irritating
- the only foundation that the longer you leave on your skin, the more benefits your skin has
- in essence, it is a breathable second skin
- non comedogenic
- fragrance free
- made using organically certified ingredients
Oxygenetix Breathable Foundation has 14 different shades for all skin types. 7 Blue based shades and 7 yellow based shades.
Aloe Barbadenis Base: its antibacterial properties protect compromised skin while gently removing dead surface cells.
Ceravite Complex is a patent pending ingredient that promotes oxyen uptake assisting in the proliferation (growth and uptake of cells by multiplication) of collagen and connective tissue growth. Basically, Ceravite delivers high amounts of oxygen to the cells to help make the vital productive cells work harder.
Application: Apply as you would a normal foundation. This foundation is also buildable if you are looking for a better coverage.

If you are a Dermalogica Junkie, you will be as excited as I am about the launch of Dermalogica’s first peel – The BioSurface Peel launching in Dermalogica stockists on the 1st September – only 5 days left to wait!
A few weeks ago I attended the press launch of the BioSurface Peel at the Dermalogica Head Office. Sonette, the Comunications Manager from Dermalogica who is also an expert on peels, gave us a very informative and educating talk on the new peel. A chemical peel is different to normal exfoliation in that it has much deeper penetration, you will get visible peeling, stimulation of the skin cells in much deeper layers of the skin and a short treatment time. In short, a chemical peel is a much more aggressive way of treating the skin, the results are also longer lasting.
Dermalogica currently has 3 levels of exfoliation, with the BioSurface Peel being the 4th
•1st Level: Skin Prep Scrub | Daily Microfoliant | Daily Resurfacer | MultiVitamin Thermofoliant (these are your exfoliators you use at home)
•2nd Level: Skin Exfoliation System
•3rd Level: MultiVitamin Power Exfoliation | Exfoliant Accelerator 35 (Professional treatments only)
Taken from the Press Release:
“Professional skin care therapists now have a new level of service to offer clients in the form of BioSurface™ Peel, Dermalogica’s first-ever chemical peel, exclusively formulated for use in skin care centres and spas around the world.
This revolutionary four-step exfoliant system is the first range of products to be introduced within Professional Expert Strength, a new line of professional products only available to licensed skin care therapists. BioSurface™ Peel addresses a diverse array of conditions that include reducing skin roughness and the appearance of fine lines as well as helping to treat hyperpigmentation, pseudofolliculitis (razor bumps), and acneic inflammation. This new procedure offers the many benefits of traditional chemical peels, but with little to no post-peel redness or downtime—a huge advantage for consumers.
“Today’s woman is time-deprived, but still cares greatly about her skin health and wants results,” comments Diana Howard, VP of Research and Development and Global Education for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. “Since Dermalogica launched more than 25 years ago, its mission has always been to set the industry standard and provide its tribe of professional skin care therapists with the most cutting edge products and treatments so they are best equipped to meet the demands of today’s consumers. The new BioSurface™ Peel will provide consumers with the results they desire without any recovery downtime.”
A peel with no downtime or post peel redness, is that not fantastic?
How can your skin benefit from a peel or a course of peels?
• Dramatically reduces skin roughness
• Minimise fine lines
•Reduce acne breakouts
•Fade epidermal pigmentation (pigmentation in the epidermis/first layer of the skin)
Please note that pre and post peel care is very important. If you are not currently a Dermalogica user I suggest you visit a Dermalogica Skin Care Centre and ask them to prescribe the best products to prime your skin. Post peel your therapist will advise homecare depending on what concern you are addressing. Sun protection is vital after a peel.
I am going for a peel next week and will write another post guiding through the process and what each step is all about.
In connection with the Bio Surface Peel, Dermalogica have launched the #getnaked campaign – because “great skin has nothing to hide”. Such a great campaign as we all know how much we try to hide our skin when we feel it is less than perfect.
Watch the behind the scenes video of Dermalogica’s #getnaked campaign here
I was recently invited to the launch of Dermalogica’s new concept store in Rosebank Mall. I had first heard about Dermalogica’s concept stores when I had my salon many years ago and was wondering when they would find there way to South Africa.
“Dermalogica Concept Spaces redefine the future of skin care through a branded experience, and the convergence of skin care expertise with results driven product.”
Dermalogica’s Concept Store is all about educating the consumer about their skin and about the products. It is not an ordinary skin care centre in that the only treatments available are Dermalogica Facials, FaceMapping and MicroZone Treatments. This store gives the consumers a chance to play with the product, and as the tester stand says “dive right in” – I mean, who wouldn’t want to sit all day and play with those products?
At Dermalogica Rosebank you will also find a Skin Bar which is an interactive place for FaceMapping to take place, you may also sit here and play with and get to know the products with the help of the Dermalogica Skin Care Experts on Hand. FaceMapping is complimentary at the Concept Stores and is used to divide the skin into 14 zones to correctly prescribe your best treatment and home care routine.
A MicroZone treatment is a 20 minute facial target at one particular zone or skin concern designed to receive target, localised results. It is great if you are short of time, as a top up in-between your normal treatments or if you are on a budget and want the benefit of a skin care treatment, while purchasing products. The Microzone Treatment is R280.00 and takes 20 minutes. I love that the space is ‘open’ as it draws the public in and gets them to question what is happening, and thereby educating them about skincare.
You can also have any Dermalogica Treatment at the Concept Store. The treatment room is completely sound proofed so you cannot hear any of the noise from the store. You also have your choice of soothing music and light colours.
Thank You to Dermalogica for a great morning, and for the MicroZone Treatment and the Dynamic Skin Recovery, I will be posting a review on both shortly!
PS: If you are looking at getting started on Dermalogica and have no idea where to start, or just want to trial the products, this kit is perfect for you. Priced at R690.00, containing 4 of Dermalogica’s cult products, you can’t go wrong. This kit is also great for traveling.
I recently attended the Meridian Spa Launch in connection with Dermalogica and although I’d seen the pictures when they listed on Salon-Finder.co.za it was so much grander in person.
I met Samantha, the owner of Meridian Spa and Yolandi, the spa manager. Samantha gave me a me a tour and I was amazed at the space and the beautiful gardens. The spa is set on a beautiful property in the heart of Bryanston, close enough to be accessible to the Sandton CBD, yet when you drive in through the gates you will feel like you are in the middle of the bush! Downstairs was a fireplace so you instantly warmed up and as I was fighting flu I was given warm bean bag for over my shoulders – there is nothing better that a spa that goes the extra mile for there clients and I believe this is what will make Meridian Spa stand out from the rest.
Apart from the amazing space, their reception desk is one of a kind. they also have 3 fire places, a Jacuzzi, 2 luxurious baths, conferencing facilities, a relaxation area and a pool – what more could you possibly need in a spa?
I was treated to a Dermalogica Microzone Treatment, which is a 20 minute treatment target on your problem areas (these treatments are perfect for in-between facials or if you have limited time available and need a quick face fix!)
To me, the best part of my experience was lying on the heated treatment bed. I really don’t like squashing on the standard white metal tables when I want to relax – they never feel sturdy and I always feel like I am going to fall over the edge! The treatment beds at Meridian are huge and so comfortable given 10 more minutes I would have been asleep!
The treatment rooms are also spacious, so you will in no way feel claustrophobic and all have views out to the gardens. The pedicure chairs are just as grand, and I will definitely be back for a pedicure as I am told Gladys is the best in Joburg.

I received Dermalogica’s Daily Resurfacer just under 2 weeks ago to test and although I usually like to trial a product for at least 4 weeks before I will write I review on it, I can already see such a marked improvement in my skin that I thought why wait!
I was sceptical about this exfoliator at first because I prefer a more mechanical scrub (apricot kernel, microbeads, rice grains) and Daily Resurfacer falls into the chemical exfoliation bracket due to the Alpha and Beta hydroxy acids it contain but after the first use I found that the pre-soaked ‘sponge’ applicator acted as a slight mechanical scrub so it was a win, win!
Daily Resurfacer is gentle enough to be used daily on your skin, and I used it as part of my nightly cleansing routine. I didn’t feel any tingling at all during the time I have been using it and my skin is already much brighter and smoother. I did however read (last night only) that for best results you can use this in conjunction with Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant. They recommend used the Microfoliant in the morning and the Resurfacer at Night. As I am always on the quest for brighter, glowing skin I will try this an update this post in 2 weeks!
I gave this product 4/5 purely for the cost – if you are on a budget this product only last 35 applications -so just over a month.
Daily Resurfacer is a leave on exfoliator containing hydroxy acids to smooth the skin and Dermalogica’s brightening complex to help even skin tone it also contains hyaluronic acid to help skin retain water and plump up fine lines.
I have really enjoyed this exfoliator so much that I am going to continue to use it on my skin – I have actually just had someone comment on how good my skin is looking.
Salicylic Acid: resurfaces and stimulates natural exfoliation. Apple Fruit and Sugar Cane: extracts that stimulate cell renewal and cell turnover while gently sloughing surface cells.
Hyaluronic Acid and GAGs: glycosaminoglycans that hold up to 1,000 times their weight in water help to hydrate skin.
Zostera (Seagrass or Eelgrass): contains polysaccharides (sugars) that form a hydration net over skin’s surface that cushions and protects
Dermalogica also have the following great exfoliators in their range:
•Skin Prep Scrub
•Gentle Cream Exfoliant
•Exfoliating Face Brush
Product Class: Exfoliator
Application: After cleansing pat skin dry. Tear open pouch and remove applicator, place over index finger and apply in a circular motion over the face. There is enough product on the pre-soaked applicator that you can go all the way down your neck and onto your décolletage. Wait to dry. Spray your toner, use a booster if necessary, and then moisturise.
